A creativity cocoon
What sort of things can we produce when we allow ourselves to be wrapped in a creativity cocoon? How much time do we spend tied to “must do” and “should do” that would be better spent letting our minds wander?
What are we missing out on by being so constantly busy that we do not allow any time for idle thought and introspection?
There’s no doubt, I’ve spent a lot of time doing things which I was bound to through commitment. Keeping my plate full to the brim and continuously reaching for “what’s next”. This isn’t meant to sound like a complaint, it’s just that in that constant motion I discounted the importance of downtime and the treasures that can be found in outright boredom.
It is the ultimate luxury to own your free time, yet the feeling of sitting still is so foreign that keeping an open block of time requires conscious effort.
When shouldering the unfamiliar burden of free time, it takes discipline not to shrug, and return to the comfort of chaos and bustle. After you’ve become accustomed to having obligations well beyond the hours at the office, you feel almost guilty for embracing the quiet evenings and carefree weekends.
So, what will come of my time in the cocoon? I don’t know just yet, and that’s half the fun. Maybe I’ll find my voice in poetry, or try my hand at fiction, or scribble circles and lines all over the brand new Clairfontaine pad that has found its way to the coffee table. I dare not plan it out, and your guess is as good as mine. À la prochaine!
